Happy New Year!
by marcolandry ~ January 1st, 2009. Filed under: technology. What a year! Technology always fascinated me and this year was no different. Conservative estimates indicate that the number of emails sent in the US in 2008 was between 7 and 10 billion. LinkedIn has now more than 29 million members, Facebook has a staggering 140 million active users, Wikipedia reached the 10 million articles milestone in March with no signs of slowing down. YouTube stats are even more astounding - 13 hours of video are uploaded every minute. The growth of content is phenomenal, there are so many sources of information that knowledge workers spend approximately one third of their time searching for data.
In the next few years, IT experts will be busy coping with the explosion of data and the security risks of cloud computing and other digital threats associated with Software as a Service (SaaS). But this explosion of data will not only cause some challenges in the corporate world, it will also complicate the life of individual users with limited digital literacy. If you store content of personal and emotional value on your PC, you should probably think about making a new year resolution to buy a good antivirus system and make an effort to backup your data at least every few months.
As an alternative to backing up information on a regular basis, many users now upload pictures and videos to various sites, this way if they ever experience some technical problems with their PC, they can restore these media files of value from their favorite web2.0 application.
